The PDF layout has settings for controlling various types of numbering in your PDF outputs including:
-
Page numbers
You can set Paligo to show or hide page numbers that are added to the header table or footer table.
To learn how to show/hide the page numbers, see Include Page Numbers in PDFs.
To learn how to add a page number to the header or footer, see:
To set page numbering to start after the table of contents, see Start Page Numbers after the TOC.
-
Section numbers (heading numbers)
To learn how to set up numbered headings, see Manage Section Numbering (PDF).
-
Title numbers, such as numbering for figure titles and table titles.

-
List and procedure numbers, see List Styling (PDF).
To include page numbers in your PDF outputs:
-
Select Layout in the top menu.
-
Select the Layout you want to update or Create a Layout.
Tip

-
Select General and choose Page.
-
Set Print page numbers to:
-
Yes
To include page numbers in your headers or footers in your PDFs
-
No
To exclude page numbers from the headers or footers in your PDFs
-
-
Select Save.
-
If you want to include a page number, set a cell in the footer or header to show the page number. For details, see:
When you publish content with this layout, the resulting PDF will include page numbers if:
-
Print page numbers is set to Yes (default is Yes)
and
-
You have set the left, center, or right cells in the header or footer to show the page number.
If Print page numbers is set to No, the page number is not shown in the header or footer. Similarly, if Print page numbers is set to Yes, but the header and footer tables do not include a page number, then no page number is shown.
By default, Paligo starts the page numbering on the first page of the TOC (table of contents). The page numbers then continue throughout the rest of the document. If you prefer, you can set Paligo to start the page numbering after the TOC, so that only the content pages are numbered.
To set page numbering to start after the TOC:
-
Select Layout in the top menu.
-
Select the Layout you want to update or Create a Layout.
Tip
You can copy the URL of the Layout Editor and paste it into a new tab in your browser. This can be useful if you frequently switch between your Paligo content and the Layout settings.
-
Select General and choose Page.
-
Use the Start page counter from the first body page setting to control where the page numbering begins.
Choose either:
-
Yes
Paligo will begin the page numbers on the first body page, after the table of contents.
-
No
Paligo will begin the page numbers on the first page of the table of contents. No is the default setting.
-
-
Select Save.
You can choose to have numbered headings, such as "1.2 Power up the device" in your PDF output. Typically, you will either:
-
Apply numbering to all sections
-
Choose to have no numbered headings at all.
But there may be times when you need a mix of numbered headings and headings without numbering and for that, you can use the element attribute label
.
To set the heading numbering:
-
Select Layout and then select the PDF Layout you are going to use for publishing. Alternatively, you can create a new PDF Layout (see Create a Layout).
-
Select Section Titles and then General.
-
Use the Section Numbering setting to apply the numbering that you want for the majority of your headings:
-
Enable to apply numbering to the section titles
-
Disable for no numbering
-
Default to inherit the value for this setting from the base Layout. The base Layout is either a built-in Layout provided by Paligo or another custom Layout, see Layout Relationships - Base, New, Duplicate.
-
-
Select Save.
If you want Paligo to apply the Section Numbering setting to all of your headings, you can ignore steps 5-11.
If you want a mix of numbered headings and text-only headings, continue from step 5.
-
Select the topic or component in the Content Manager to open it in the Editor.
-
Select the
section
element in the Element Structure Menu. -
Select Go to element.
-
Add the
label
attribute in the Element Attributes Panel. -
Set the
label
value to:-
1 if you want the section to have a numbered heading
-
0 if you want the section to have no number, only a plain text heading. The heading will appear as text-only, both in the topic itself and in the table of contents.
When you publish, any topics that have the label attribute will use that setting to determine whether they have numbered headings. They will not be affected by the Section numbering setting in the Layout. Other topics that do not have the
label
attribute will use the Section Numbering defined in the Layout. -
-
Select Save.
-
Repeat steps 5-10 for each topic that you want to have different section numbering to the rest of the document.
Some elements, such as tables and examples, can have titles. By default, these titles consist of an auto-generated label, a number, and a number delimiter, for example, "Table 1. Specifications". Depending on your requirements, you can set Paligo to include or exclude the title numbers and labels.
To turn the numbering and auto-labels for PDF outputs on or off:
-
Select Layout in the top menu.
-
Select the Layout you want to update or Create a Layout.
Tip
You can copy the URL of the Layout Editor and paste it into a new tab in your browser. This can be useful if you frequently switch between your Paligo content and the Layout settings.
-
Select Formal Elements > General in the sidebar.
-
Set Use auto-label for formal elements to:
-
Enabled to include the title numbering and auto-labels for tables, examples, and other elements with titles.
-
Disabled to exclude the title numbering and auto-labels for titles.,
-
-
Select Save.
When you publish with this PDF layout, the title elements will include or exclude the auto-label and numbering, depending on your selection in the layout.
